It depends on which model DesignJet printer you are dealing with. You definitely need to replace the belt, and you may need to replace the tensioner as well. In most cases, it is not necessary to replace the tensioner pulley.

It depends when the grinding occurs, and what part of the machine the noise is coming from. In some cases, the carriage belt may be slipping on the motor cog. In other cases, the rear carriage bushing may be damaged or missing.

While replacing the printhead(s) or the service station may temporarily improve print quality, the most likely root cause of the problem is failing seals in the ink tube assembly. The good news is: even a poorly performing ink tube system doesn't necessarily need to be replaced as long as you install the auxiliary printhead seals on your printheads, and perform a purge of the ink tube system, and manually refill the printheads with the tools included in the upgraded printhead recovery kit.

The very first step in diagnostics is to perform a manual purge of the ink tube system using the universal DesignJet priming tool. If errors persist, replace ink cartridges.

The first step is to clean and lubricate the carriage slide rod(s) using the lubrication oil. If errors persist, remove the cutter from the machine. If errors persist, check the condition of the belt, and make sure it's properly positioned on the tensioner pulley. If everything else looks correct, check the rear carriage bushing is present – this is not the C-shaped ones that ride the rail.

If the machine isn't even trying to pull the paper in, that means it can't detect the paper has entered the feed path. This points to a failing media sensor (out-of-paper sensor). If the printer does pull the paper in, but can't seem to find the paper edge, your printer may have a dirty or failing line sensor.

The first thing to check is for fan spin and LED indicator lights. If there is absolutely no motion and no light, the issue is almost certainly a dead power supply.

You have a couple options. Most DesignJets have the capability to connect directly to a PC via printer USB cable. If that doesn't work for your situation, you can connect the printer to the network using a JetDirect card.
